VIP Meet and Greet Purchased, will be a separate post!

Sound/Style: Death Metal. An original, old school DM sound with lots of groove and blasts. Very easy listening for anyone a fan of the genre. 4 Piece Band: Vocalist, Bassist, Guitar, Drums.

A new band to the scene that sounds like they have been around for years. They brought a classic death metal sound with an intense presence and tight set.

I was super hyped up the entire time they played, their riffs instantly sound like they have the potential to be classics. While their sound is somewhat retro, I was not bored by their set- guitars were tight and loud, yet clear. Great soloing and breakdown grooves. The drummer effortlessly blasted and controlled the timing of each song, making people in the crowd say, "damn, this is a new band!?" The vocalist was very comfortable with her voice, channeling her inner Corpsegrinder influences. I was very impressed with her. All of the members shared a positive energy and vibe, creating a perfect storm. Cohesion is the name of the game for Castrator. Their small discography does not equate to their monstrous sound.

I'm excited and hopeful to see their discography grow, I love their gender representation as well-(Makes their name so much better as well) Shout out to Cattle and the rest of the bands for having them on tour.

I'm excited for Castrator, I hope the community helps this band take off.

Start listening now, this band is fantastic!

BattleJacket Addition Y/N: Yes! Cant wait for more from this band.

-I really want to keep this blog positive and unbiased, but later in this section about Sanguisugabogg I am going get a bit off-track and delve a bit into a trend that I'm noticing in metal nowadays...and separately, Ronnie Radke.

Sound/Style: Death Metal? Lots of slam and beatdown-esque rhythms and breakdown sections. IMO the bogg is a fun mix of death metal and hardcore. (don't come after me for saying that, the kings in Dying Fetus just played a hardcore show and it was fantastic...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlNqnVu1ELA&t=211s) 4 Piece Band: Vocalist, Guitar, Bassist, Drummer.

Thoughts: Seeing them twice now, Sanguisugabogg loves to play in Denver, giving shoutouts to Dave Otero, members of Skinless, and local friends and family. It's always hilarious and works so well when the front man thanks the crowd and his homies in the area, then immediately introduces a song by saying "This is a song about being f*cking dragged by a truck." Gotta love em. Sound wise, tight. Very cohesive sound and set! Their set was substantially longer than last time I saw them, as they've expanded their discography. This in conjunction with the popularity that Sanguisuggabogg has gained showed immensely from last time I saw them a year prior. The pit was savage and huge. The guitar and bass tones while fuzzy mix well and produce a heavy and devastating chug- encapsulating the trademark bogg sound. Vocals hit hard as usual, Devin not only does a great job of waking the crowd up but not letting them settle down. The bogg will be on many..many bills going forward.

Also, if you are the person that immediately left the pit after you grabbed the football at the denver show...WTF dude?.. (If you know, you know)

Battle Jacket Addition: Y/N: TBD

Writing this quite a bit of time after this show - the vocalist of Sanguisugabogg is now the most recent "victim" of Ronnie Radke, as he targeted the frontman Devin Swank on instagram. The response and support has has been hilarious and overwhelming...Yeah Radke called Devin short, but at least the band isn't riddled with accusations (should be convictions) of sexual assault and other general bad human stuff - (Ronnie's speciality). The Bogg is already growing quickly within the extreme music scene, this might just push them over the top. Great guys, fun music, growing fanbase. I cannot wait for all the antics/chants about Ronnie the next time I see these guys...

Okay thats enough about Radke, god forbid he finds this blog and posts me on his instagram story....Here's the trend I mentioned I would write about.

Sanguisugabogg in my opinion are joining several other bands in some "Mixed Bill" waves, expanding and pushing for some wild combinations of bands on tour together. This is kind of giving the middle finger to elitist and gatekeeping fans that are quite present in both the death metal and hardcore scene. (AND the metal scene in general..) While I am still relatively new to the deeper culture of both of these scenes, I know for sure the difference between a crowd/pit for bands like Cannibal Corpse vs crowds/pits for bands like Sunami. Theres no hiding that theres a stark difference between someone who stands by the phrase "no karate in the pit" vs someone who perhaps dawns a battle jacket or prefers push pits/circle pits.

Earlier I hinted that Dying Fetus just played a hardcore show, (linked above) John Gallagher (the frontman) looked like he was having the time of his life, and gave a shoutout to the hardcore community midway into his set. That is FOR SURE going to make some people mad. I love it. In conjunction-I really don't think that one of the pioneers of the death metal genre carrying the name of "Dying Fetus" is going to care about your opinions....

In my earlier post about the aforementioned Dying Fetus's "Make Them Beg for Death Tour," I mentioned the crowd dynamic and how it went from two stepping one minute to circle pit the next- my prediction is that these dynamics are going to continue and will grow. This should be very, very entertaining. It seems that bands are talking to each other and saying, let's do a tour, because our fans deserve to enjoy any genre of metal they please...and maybe, just maybe, the bands are sharing some of their tastes with the world as well.

To finish- While these differences in fanbases, preferences, and scenes will always exist, mixed bills in my opinion are entertaining, inclusive, and expansive. I know I've been guilty of liking one genre and maybe feeling like the other band from a different genre is a "guilty pleasure." My point is, when the death metal icons Dying Fetus go on tour with the Philadelphia based hardcore band Jesus Piece, are they trying to make the metal scene more cohesive and united? You tell me...

Sound/Style: OG Death Metal! One of the pioneers of the genre.

Thoughts: I was very stoked to see Immolation, as they have paved the way for other huge names like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. For me It's like seeing one of the "big four"

While Immolation is considered one of the fathers of modern death metal, that does not take away from their own sound. It's hard to explain Immolation's uniqueness besides being extremely intense and heavy. It's truly some pissed off music. Aggressive, tight, and angry. When I first discovered Immolation I immediately noticed how mysterious and somewhat disturbing their sound is. Perfect qualities for death metal. Immolation also do not slack on production, as they continue to release fantastic records. It's just one after another...

Immolation is instantly recognizable to me, with Ross Dolan's savage lows and chunky bass tones, Robert Vigna's trademark rolling, intense guitar riff structures, and Steve Shalaty's extremely tight, precise drumming. Digitally Immolation has a very dark, eerie sound and I was interested to see if this came through on stage. Their sound is uniquely delivered, and I was interested to see how this came across live. They mixed their setlist nicely, with a fantastic mix of newer songs and plenty of old classics. ) This band continues to age like fine wine). I was blown away with how their mix was delivered, with each instrument sharing a spotlight. Intense is the best way to describe their set. Their crowd control and energy was very nice, it brought a nice atmospheric and somewhat evil feeling to the venue. They provide the vibe that the doors of the venue would swing open and we would all be abducted by winged goblins or jackals....

Don't let all this fool you, all of the guys were very grateful to the crowd and city for having them, and gave shout outs to all the other bands on the bill. Arriving to the show as early as I did for the VIP experience, I noticed several members of immolation hanging out with the members of Castrator, just being genuinely nice humans. I love this community.

Okay yeah I know I didn't say much compared to other bands in this post, but sometimes I just want to let the music do the talking.

Legends..

BattleJacket Addition Y/N: Oh yeah

Sound/Style: Extreme Brutal Deathmetal with roots in good ole' Grindcore. (Deathgrind)

Thoughts: There is truly no one in the business like Cattle Decapitation. Cattle puts music together that encapsulates feelings of existential dread that the human existence and its destructive path present. These lyrical themes and imagery showcase a kind of morbid but cathartic acceptance in a way - one that often resonates with me in my work field. On this note, while I'll admit that Cattle's earlier sound and image was bit shocking and "too much" for my virgin "pre extreme-metal" ears, but as soon as I dove into their lyrics and read into some of their controversial creations I was hooked. To put it simply, music and metal especially has always granted me the outlet of putting sounds and lyrics to feelings that I can't express or explain. Once again citing my career path, watching society and governments across the world continually fail, marginalize, and target certain populations can be a hard thing to explain:

"Whats it like doing what you do?"

-Well, sometimes it feels like I'm witnessing:

"Incineration of a species

The cremation of a disease

With flame and gases reducing to ashes

Entire nations - all human communities

Poisoning everything - stripped of all immunities

This is the way we deal with our own kind

Self-destructing power of the human mind

Burn! Back from whence you came

Return to carbon once again

Now we see that the true evil has a face

Now we know the devil is the human race"

(lyrics from Finish Them - Cattle Decap)

Cattle's Monolith of Inhumanity and The Anthropocene Extinction are widely regarded by fans of the genre as musical and lyrical masterpieces, and personally the writing in Death Atlas and Terrasite can join these two. (I haven't quite delved into Cattle's really early stuff, but will).

As soon as I discovered Cattle Decap in early 2019, I was instantly blown away and somewhat mortified of Travis Ryan's shrieking vocal openings and guttural slams, paired with lightning fast trem picks and blast beats.

The question was, does this translate to their live performance?

Travis Ryan's "clean" vocals are simply special. Digitally and live they are visceral, vile, evil, dramatic - not to mention extremely difficult and show extreme amounts of talent. I find that a lot of vocals in similar/adjacent genres are somewhat cookie cutter these days, blending in with each other as they try to mimic each others breakdowns etc..This has and will never been an issue with Cattle Decap. You know instantly when their music is being played. I mean how many other vocalists can you think of in this scene that make rolled R's brutal as hell? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWeTeFn0LhM -for reference listen to the first chorus)

The genre(s) of grindcore or deathgrind or anything similiar can be a bit intimidating with their sound and imagery, but the stories that cattle decapitation tell within their fantastic discography peaked my interest into the more extreme. Each album has a different feeling, atmosphere and theme. sets them apart and pulls you in. They are creative, brutal, and uncensored.

I am obsessed with this band.
